This paper introduces a novel approach to knowledge-based understanding of images. Our system maintains common-sense knowledge of many situations and uses this knowledge to analyze the input images and allows us to query the system for interesting inferences. The domain that we have chosen to implement our system deals with the images of pre-historic cave art. However, the approach is equally applicable to any domain where we can use common-sense knowledge to interpret and understand images. Our approach uses a frame-based representation to encode knowledge. Some of inferences that it allows are generating possible goals for actors and actions portrayed in the images, retrieving images of events occurring after/before the event in question, making a story-line of images form a given set of images, etc.
